ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

It has been a few years since I posted a letter from the Chairman regarding our Seminar on Appraising at Cornell University. This, however, is a very special year for the Institute of Assessing Officers – it’s our 50th birthday or anniversary, if you prefer. And we all know what a milestone the big 5-0 is!

Well, our annual seminar at Cornell is not quite as old as the IAO. It began in July 1961 with a single weeklong course that all sixty-six students attended. This year we are offering 6 full week and 6 half-week courses, ranging from the initial offerings of our two brand new basic certification valuation courses to SPSS modeling, and I expect double the number of students in attendance. I think the first Board of Trustees would be proud of how the Cornell seminar has grown and expanded to meet the educational needs of assessors across New York State.

On the Saturday following the 1961 Cornell seminar, the IAO exam was offered for those seeking admission to the Institute. Thirty-eight candidates challenged the exam that year – wouldn’t I love to see that many candidates sit for the exam this July! If you’ve been thinking about it, why not go for it. The IAO-1 course is on the agenda at Cornell – you’ll work hard but many of your colleagues have said it is a great prep course for the exam. Think positive and imagine being awarded your IAO designation in September as we continue our 50^th year celebration!

Another tradition, started at that first Cornell, continues this year with a Kansas City steak bake. Our founding fathers knew the consequences of all work and no play and so do we. And, if you are an IAO or a candidate for admission, we just might have another surprise up our sleeve!

So take the time this July to join your fellow assessors, share stories and a few laughs, brush up on your valuation skills or learn some new ones and enjoy all the Finger Lakes and Cornell University has to offer. Hope to see you there.
